::: Universidad de Caldas

Universidad de Caldas, a High Quality Accredited by the Colombian Ministry of Education institution, generates, appropriates, spreads, and applies knowledge through curricular, investigative and projection processes. It is located in the Central Western area of the country in Manizales, a city on top of the Andes Mountains which makes part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, recently appointed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Universidad de Caldas is the oldest and best recognized University in the area and it has contributed to the academic, economic, cultural and scientific development of the region. The University offers 34 undergraduate programs in the Faculties of Arts and Humanities, Exact Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Legal and Social Sciences. Health Sciences, and Engineering. 51 Postgraduate Programs are offered and there are 3 Institutes devoted to Research which belong to worldwide research networks.

Universidad de Caldas has made a lot of progress in internationalization processes reflected in the increasing amount of incoming and outgoing students’ and faculty members’ mobility and in the participation in international networks.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Universidad de Caldas, thanks to its three Research Institutes (Agricultural Biotechnology, Health and Social Sciences), its 58 research groups and its 12 indexed journals, is in the process of becoming a third generation University where innovation is a fundamental factor. It is important to highlight the University collaboration with other institutions and businesses in the region and the country. In this sense Universidad de Caldas has developed some strategies which include the Telemedicine project with the greatest coverage in the country, the work with Colciencias and the Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos to develop a research and stratigraphy institute; the creation of spaces for design and creation such as a media lab and the image collection, and the direct work with agricultural producers and agricultural businesses for the Biotechnology research.

Through the innovation center from the Engineering Faculty Universidad de Caldas is strengthening the KPO (knowledge Process Outsourcing) process especially in software development. Social research makes an important part of the research portfolio at a University that has had a long tradition in the Arts and Humanities development.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The University counts with 6 Campuses in Manizales and 3 farms for academic training, agricultural and livestock production. Total built area: 72.904 square meters, including 11 buildings for academic, research and administrative activity and complementary areas such as the Alumni pavilion, dorms, gyms, and health services. Open spaces area 140.500 m2, including open sports areas, a cycling track, tennis courts, farms and a botanical garden, suitable for research of native species and the conservation of tropical biodiversity. Museums: Natural History Collection, Archeology collection, Geology collection and Art collection.
