The Universidad Autónoma de Occidente got legal status by resolution No. 0618 of February 20th, 1970. The first academic programs offered to the community were Economics, Industrial Chemicals Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. On February 21st 1973 Mr. Luis H. Perez was appointed Rector. He is the current Rector.

In 2004, the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente started leading the formation of the Alliance for Education Comunitec: eight public and private entities joined together their human, financial, technological and connectivity resources to bring technology education to communities strata 1, 2 and 3. Also, the Botanical Garden of Cali was opened under the administration of the Universidad Autonoma de Occidente and the temporary Autonoma de Occidente linkage was created: Procívica Television is intended for producing TV News 90 Minutes, an informative amongst the highest rated regional channels.

Moreover, the Valle del Cauca is the first department in forming a network of Regional Higher Education, Ceres, which is led by the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente. Furthermore, in the classification of the 100 companies 'High Tech' in Colombia, the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente was ranked the third with greatest investment in technology. In 2012, the University received environmental certification ISO 14001:2004 and high quality institutional accreditation for four years.

In 2005, the Botanical Garden of Cali is opened under the administration of the Universidad Autonoma de Occidente and the temporary Autonoma de Occidente linkage is created: Procívica Television is intended for producing TV News 90 Minutes, an informative among the highest rated regional channels.

Research groups

Also, with the recognition of Colciencias to 14 research groups and the classification of seven of these in Category 'A' of excellence, the Universidad Autonoma is placed:

• 1st place in southwestern Colombia among private universities
• 4th place nationally among private universities
• 8th place among all of the universities in the country

The University celebrates its 35th year anniversary 1970-2005

In 2006, through the Partnership for the Creation of New Ceres in the Valle del Cauca, comprised of 17 public and private organizations and supported by the national government, the Universidad Autónoma provides technological education to the inhabitants of the municipalities of Candelaria, El Cerrito and Zarzal.

Fourteen entities in the region, including the Universidad Autónoma, constitute the Alliance of the Agribusiness Sugarcane Sector to offer technical, professional, and technological education programs to the inhabitants of Valle del Cauca and the area of influence of the sugarcane cluster relevant to its exercise.

In 2009, the Administrative and Financial Vice rectory is certified with the Quality Standard ISO 9001 version 2008 of the Bureau Veritas Certification and the Faculty of Engineering at the University creates the new Centre of Educational Innovation in Engineering, CIEI.

In 2010, the Institutional Entrepreneurship Center is created, CIEE.

In 2011, all the units that make up the unit of the Presidency got certified in the Quality Standard ISO 9001 version 2008 of Bureau Veritas Certification. Also, the Interdisciplinary Center of studies of the Colombian Pacific Region, CIER, was created in order to work on issues of the region, related to environment and sustainable development.

In 2012, the University received environmental certification ISO 14001:2004 and high quality institutional accreditation for four years, according to Resolution No. 10740 of September 6, 2012 of the Ministry of National Education.

Topics and research areas of the University

The Direction of Research and Technological Development (DRTD) is the executive unit System Research at the University Autónoma de Occidente (UAO) with three working areas:

• The programs and lines of research are focused on projects as basic units of work and make academic axis system.

• Research groups and their associated forms and derivatives as centers, institutes, consortia, corporations, and other networks make up the organizational axis system.

• The institutional framework of the UAO and the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation (SNCTI) make the normative axis.

The DIDT formulates and proposes to Directorate of the University's policies in the fields of Science, Technology and Innovation (CTI) and to execute them, traces support and promotion strategies framed in quality standards determined by the SNCTI and prospective analysis national and international levels on the different sectors in which the UAO has focused its research developments.

Currently, there are 29 research groups in different areas of knowledge, led by teachers who are grouped in the faculties of the University: Basic Sciences, Social Communication, Humanities, Engineering, Economics and Management.
